Prices are late, greyed or missing
When an exchange goes quiet, the pages grey its prices, then take them off the table, rather than show an old price as new. Here’s when that happens, and why.
On an index
Each exchange’s prices come in rounds; the perpetuals refresh every 30 seconds. If nothing new comes from one for 15 seconds on spot, or 75 seconds on perpetuals, its prices stay but grey, and the status bar says Behind with how long it’s been. After 90 seconds on spot, or 3 minutes on perpetuals, they come off the table and it says No reply until the exchange answers again. The scoreboards and Signals follow the same rules.
On a coin page
If nothing comes from an exchange for 10 seconds, its card says Stalled, and if it stays quiet the site connects to it again: Reconnecting, then Live.
If every price stands still and the header says when they’re from, the page is paused: Space pauses a coin page’s live prices, and starts them again.
In the background
Browsers slow a tab you aren’t looking at, and phones hold its connections while they sleep or lock. A page that reads many exchanges at once, as an index, a scoreboard, Signals or a futures and options page does, keeps reading for 60 seconds in a background tab, then stops until you come back, and starts again at once. A coin page picks up the same way, which can show Reconnecting for a moment. With alerts on, Signals keeps reading in the background.
Futures and options
Their pages ask for figures every minute on a coin’s page and every 2 minutes on the others, so a figure there can be up to that old.
Still late?
If one exchange stays late while the others are live, the trouble is that exchange, or the way to it: An exchange won’t connect goes through the causes.
